Mike Norvell issues cold statement on young guys who may enter the transfer portal
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU head coach Mike Norvell is likely coaching for his job over the next year or two after going 2-10 in the 2024 season after starting as a preseason top-10 team. The reasons it happened are many, but the season is over, and he has some coaching vacancies to fill.
He also has to add some much-needed talent to the roster while also looking to keep as many talented young players who signed over the past two years. The allure of the transfer portal to search for greener pastures is likely at an all-time high in college football, with players having the ability to leave a program whenever they want.
FSU went with a full-on youth movement about midway through the season, with several young guys getting extended playing time. However, there were a few who may not have gotten on the field as much as they wanted. It's likely because they were not close to ready and hadn't shown a work ethic or consistency in practice.
It's a world where there is little patience to put in the work and wait your turn. Mike Norvell was asked for his thoughts on if some of the young players enter the transfer portal, and he gave this cold response:
He's not wrong. I wrote about how it'll be a tell-tale sign of who decides to leave or stay last week. FSU has shown they can develop high school players. There are several guys this staff signed out of high school playing tons of snaps. Freshmen Landen Thomas and Amaree Williams got on the field this year, and Hykeem Williams and Destyn Hill got tons of snaps as freshman last year.
If a player isn't willing to put the work in at practice when there's likely an opportunity to get on the field early, that's not who you want in your program. If we see many young guys enter the transfer portal over the next few weeks, that'll tell you all you need to know.
