Massive offseason ahead for QB Kevin Sperry that Mike Norvell feels confident in

This could be a trend that Florida State football fans don't want to see.

Florida State football is entering another offseason that is coming off a disappointment. The fan base has experienced four losing seasons in six years under the guidance of head coach Mike Norvell. Something has to change quickly in Tallahassee because the expectations are competing for championships.

The Seminoles yet again added a large volume of players to their roster via the transfer portal and high school recruiting ranks, where they are hoping that it changes the trajectory of where the program is heading.

Even though I have been a supporter of Mike Norvell, there are individuals out there who have included him on hot-seat lists, especially after the loss to Stanford. However, the administration has expressed confidence in retaining him for the 2026 season.

The quarterback battle this offseason could be a defining moment for the Florida State football program

It looks like the most important position battle at quarterback will be decided between Stanford and Auburn transfer Ashton Daniels, as well as redshirt freshman Kevin Sperry, since JUCO option Malachi Marshall is enrolling this summer.

Daniels hasn't lit the world on fire as a signal-caller during his time in college, but he showed flashes of being successful with the Tigers, where it was surprising that former head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff elected to keep playing Jackson Arnold over him.

Once the new head coach, Alex Golesh, arrived at Auburn, it was known that Ashton Daniels wouldn't play there because Golesh would bring in Byrum Brown. With Daniels transferring out, it was assumed that he would land somewhere where he could immediately start being a redshirt senior.

It makes no sense that Daniels would be a backup in his final season, plus Coach Norvell's track record favors transfers who are experienced. While he is trying to make it seem like he is keeping the door open for a competition, it looks like it is the former Auburn signal-caller's to lose. Norvell has mentioned that Sperry is an intelligent young player who is still growing.

This leaves Kevin Sperry in a bad spot. The former four-star prospect hasn't had a ton of college experience, but this could set a bad example to high school recruits who want to play at Florida State if they keep overhauling the room with transfers.

While you could say that Daniels gives an opportunity for Sperry, Marshall, and O'Neal to compete for the job in 2027, the history of the coaching staff suggests that they will likely bring in another transfer if the progress isn't there.
