Florida State softball head coach Lonni Alameda is a Hall of Fame coach for a reason, and she knew the road game against Florida would be a great opportunity to gain some experience for young players. She started freshman Bella Dimitrijevic inside the circle, who went three innings, allowing two earned runs, two walks, and a strikeout.
Freshman Marlee Gaskell pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, two walks, and three strikeouts. Makenna Reid pitched .2 of an inning and allowed one walk.
FSU lost the game 4-3, and three of the runs Florida scored were on walks. This game was all about the little things. Florida scored two runs with two outs and had more hits with runners in scoring position.
Florida State had the bases loaded with no outs and only scored one run in the top of the fifth inning. Isa Torres and Jaysoni Beachum went 1-6 with an RBI, which didn’t help the offense.
Good experience for some young players, but it would have been nice to sweep the rival Gators.
It felt like a game that Lonni Alameda felt was more important for certain players to gain experience in a hostile setting against a top 10 opponent than winning the game. I’m not saying she wasn’t trying to win the game by some of the moves she made, but she put players in spots that she normally wouldn’t.
Maybe that gamble will pay off in the postseason, because they will likely need all of the pitchers they used tonight at some point. However, more importantly, they’ll need the offense to be more productive, which is something they’ve struggled to do against top teams this season. It’s been a whole lot of Isa Torres carrying this team at times, and we see the result if she has an unproductive night.
Florida State controls its destiny in the ACC. If they sweep Boston College this weekend, they’ll be ACC regular-season champions. Â
