Latest rumors point to FSU having a major Lane Kiffin problem with 4-star commit Mekhi Williams

This could be very difficult to navigate for Florida State football recruiting.

Florida State's 2027 recruiting class isn't where the fan base wants it to be, as they are listed outside of the top-40, according to 247Sports Composite rankings. This is unheard of for a place that the legendary Bobby Bowden built.

The Seminoles only have seven commitments in their class, and they just had three-star quarterback Logan Flaherty from Port Charlotte, Florida, pledge to the program. This was a big development for the class since the quarterbacks are the "bell cows" of the fold.

Florida State will need Flaherty to keep the commits they have in the class, as four-star safety Mekhi Williams from Ruskin, Florida, has been flirting with other schools, including LSU and Wisconsin (according to a report from Noles247's Zach Blostein).

Williams had been previously linked to Miami and head coach Mario Cristobal, but the momentum for a flip to the Hurricanes had died down. The defensive back has been on record as saying he was fully committed to Florida State, but kids nowadays can change their minds at any time in the new NIL landscape.

Florida State football has to find a way to keep Mekhi Williams in the fold

The LSU Tigers scare me with the Williams recruitment because the job security of head coach Mike Norvell is hanging by a paper clip at this point. Norvell was retained by the administration for the 2026 season after that embarrassing Stanford road loss.

When that decision became public, the fan base wondered if the administration was serious about winning and if Norvell would even be the coach after the 2026 campaign. These are valid thoughts to have about a program that has six losing seasons in eight years.

I don't blame Mekhi Williams if he decided to flip over to LSU with the "new car smell" of first-year head coach Lane Kiffin. They play in the SEC, Kiffin signed a long-term deal, and in that same timespan of eight years, the Tigers have had four double-digit seasons.

The fan base also cannot rule out Wisconsin, which he will be visiting this weekend. Luckily, Florida State will be able to make a lasting impression the weekend after on June 5th. LSU will still get the last official visit before the defensive back makes a potential final decision.

Williams is the 107th-best prospect in the 247Sports Composite rankings, so it would be a massive loss for Florida State. Even though defensive back isn't a position that the Seminoles need to work in, they should never be content with what they have.
