It's time for Mike Norvell to slam the door shut on former 4-star commit playing games

They should close that door after the stunt he pulled committing to Wisconsin.

Four-star safety Mekhi Williams had been committed to Florida State for over a year in March, but rumors started to swirl about him entertaining other schools over the past couple of months. Those rumors really picked up when LSU entered the picture with an offer in early May.

Williams set an official visit with Wisconsin on May 29th and de-committed from Florida State on June 3rd in a ceremony where a Florida State hat wasn’t even on the table. That was fortunate, since Williams decided to toss the LSU and Nebraska hats aside, in a disrespectful manner, before putting on the Wisconsin hat and committing to the Badgers.

Wisconsin didn’t offer Williams until February, and he didn’t visit there before taking his official visit, to my knowledge. Wisconsin isn’t known for producing great defensive backs, so choosing that Big Ten program over Florida State and LSU was certainly a choice.

Williams was back on Florida State’s campus this week for a 7-on-7 camp. He was seen working with FSU defensive backs coach Blue Adams and told Warchant, “I don’t want to close that door.”

Former Florida State safety commit Mekhi Williams continues to play games

All I see are red flags here. I mentioned that Florida State should stop trying to recruit Williams after the way he conducted his commitment ceremony last week. The way he does things screams he’d be a headache to deal with. If Wisconsin can get him to decommit from Florida State with only one visit after he had been to FSU a gazillion times? This screams, let me see if I keep stringing Florida State along and potentially get more money from them, and then force Wisconsin to pay more.

All this does is make Florida State look like the ex-boyfriend who buys the girl gifts while she continues to date another guy. It would be one thing if Williams de-committed and didn’t commit anywhere right away. However, the fact that he did it so quickly with a school like Wisconsin? The staff should wash their hands of that situation and move on. The more they entertain him, the more others will perceive Florida State as a program they can use for more money.

Florida State has one safety committed in Jamari Foreman and will have its top target at safety, Ta’Shawn Poole, on campus for an official visit this weekend. Whatever resources they were allocating towards Williams should be going towards Poole. He’s someone who can play early and ranks among the top five safeties nationally.

FSU has been doing a solid job of being realistic about who they can get in this recruiting cycle and cutting ties if the numbers are far apart between the two camps. FSU may not be entertaining Williams, and he may have said this as a tactic to see if they would re-engage his recruitment while on campus.

If that's the ploy, that's smart on his part, and it could be a tactic his agent is using, since he'll get a percentage of whatever contract he ultimately signs. Here's to hoping Florida State can be assertive in attaining its realistic targets, while gaining some momentum on the recruiting trail going into the season.
