FSU FOOTBALL TRANSFER PORTAL PICKUPS
Florida State football thought that they had a productive transfer portal haul last year at the wide receiver position, where they picked up Alabama's Malik Benson and LSU's Jalen Brown. I don't want to throw any shade, but both of them were expected to be productive members of the rotation.
Unfortunately, it collapsed just like the 2024 season when the Seminoles finished with a 2-10 season. Benson transferred to Oregon in the offseason to hopefully gain a better role for himself, and Brown was dismissed from the squad.
Head football coach Mike Norvell made several changes to the offseason, such as hiring former UCF coach Gus Malzahn to be the Seminoles' offensive coordinator. Most fans think that Malzahn's offensive scheme is centered around the ability to run the football.
IT'S A PLANE, IT'S A BIRD, IT'S A SQUIRREL
The Seminoles added three wide receivers via the transfer portal in USC's Duce Robinson, Tennessee's Squirrel White, and UNC's Gavin Blackwell. Florida State hopes that it will rejuvenate a passing game with signal-caller Thomas Castellanos under center.
Speaking of wide receiver Squirrel White, the former Tennessee Volunteer recorded 67 receptions for 803 yards and two touchdowns during the 2023 season. White dealt with a variety of injuries throughout his college career.
The Tennessee transfer had 34 receptions for 381 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. The best performance that he had was five catches for 71 yards against the arch-rival Florida Gators in the campaign. I would like to see White have that same impact in the Swamp in November.
Castellanos needs to utilize his dual-threat for the Seminoles' offense to be successful in 2025. I know that the "Gus Bus" is someone who likes to establish the running game early and often, but he does like to throw over the top of the opposing defense when they are expecting the run to happen.
