Florida State coaches are working to fill one of the biggest voids on the roster right now, and that’s the quarterback position. FSU had UNLV transfer quarterback Anthony Colandrea on campus over the weekend, but allowed him to leave and visit Georgia Tech without signing.
However, they knew Florida transfer quarterback DJ Lagway would visit as well. It sounds like FSU made an offer to Colandrea’s agents, and there was a potential gap on how much they were expecting and what FSU felt he was worth. Reports are that FSU is willing to pay between two and three million dollars for a quarterback.
Colandrea fits the offense well, but only has one year of eligibility left. DJ Lagway has two years of eligibility left and would likely help attract more transfer portal talent to surround him at FSU. He has an injury history and may not fit the offense as well.
It seems like FSU wants to see if Georgia Tech or someone else is willing to pay Colandrea what he’s asking, and if so, they’re fine with that. It’s one of those deals where they made a solid offer, and if he really wanted to play at FSU, it would have been a done deal. However, it seems money may be more important.
So that leaves FSU deciding to go with Lagway(if he’s willing to sign for whatever price they offer). He has an injury history and isn’t an exact fit, but has the higher ceiling and potentially two years of eligibility. We’ve heard Lagway, Mike Norvell, and Duce Robinson had dinner on Sunday night.
If they didn’t have Duce Robinson to do that with Colandrea? That could mean Lagway was their guy. At the same time, it could be that they are doing that because they feel they have to land Lagway with what happened with Colandrea. Colandrea's people seemed to be playing hardball from the jump and didn't make a move until DJ Lagway came into the picture.
I know it’s weird because Lagway played at Florida, but you want someone who wants to play at Florida State, not someone who’s chasing a bag, and FSU is the first place that Lagway visited since the transfer portal opened. His visit is expected to last through Monday. Will they let Lagway leave without signing? Will they circle back to Colandrea if Georgia Tech isn’t willing to pay what his camp wants?
It’ll be interesting to see how it plays out, but getting a quarterback in the fold would likely help expedite other positions in the transfer portal.
