FSU transfer players in the portal is mostly dead weight and some blue-chip misses

Is it inability to develop or terrible recruiting rankings?

Florida State football has seen 18 players announce intentions to enter the transfer portal since the season ended a month ago. We expected a large exodus, just as we did after the 2024 season.

Just like then, the majority of the departing players consist of dead weight, players who never produced, and blue-chip players who never developed for whatever reason. Here’s a running list of those with intentions to enter the portal when it opens on January 2nd:

  1. Jayden Parrish (three-star signee)
  2. L A Jesse Harold (four-star signee)
  3. Mario Nash Jr. (four-star signee)
  4. Tyeland Coleman (JUCO signee)
  5. Jamorie Flagg (three-star signee)
  6. Jaylin Lucas (transfer)
  7. Edwin Joseph (four-star signee)
  8. Willy Suarez (walk-on)
  9. Camdon Frier (three-star signee)
  10. Cai Bates (four-star signee)
  11. Ja’Bril Rawls (three-star signee)
  12. Kam Davis (four-star signee)
  13. Jaden Jones (JUCO transfer)
  14. Omar Graham Jr. (three-star signee)
  15. Randy Pittman Jr. (transfer)
  16. Jayson Jenkins (transfer)
  17. Jaylen King (walk-on)
  18. Landen Thomas (four-star signee)

At least 10 of these offered nothing in terms of production at any point during their time at FSU. Ja’Bril Rawls and Randy Pittman would be the only two players I’d want to stay on the roster. Many folks are getting worked up over the Landen Thomas news, but he’s no different than Kam Davis. A guy who was highly rated out of high school, who never played up to their ranking. Davis dealt with injuries and got passed up by Ousmane Kromah and Sam Singleton.

The coaching staff showed they would play younger players over the older players, so why Thomas didn’t get more opportunities probably has more to do with either his inability to block or his inability to get open in the passing game. If he were someone they believed could help them win games, he would have played like the other young guys.

So, mostly a bunch of mid players. The question is, will FSU land any quality targets in the transfer portal when it opens?
