Florida State (7-1) got back to its winning ways on Friday night with a 9-5 win over Florida Atlantic in the second game of the Clearwater Invitational. It wasn’t an easy win, as FSU had to overcome a 4-1 deficit in the second inning.

FAU touched FSU pitcher Ashley Danley for four earned runs in less than two innings. Danley walked four batters and allowed two hits before exiting the game. Jazzy Francik earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing four hits, three strikeouts, and one walk.

It was the freshmen bats that were the story of the game. Marin Heller went 2-5 with an RBI. Anne Hinde went 2-4 with a home run. Haley Griggs with 2-3 with two RBI and a home run. Makenna Sturgis went 3-4 with three RBI and a home run.

FSU pounded out 13 hits, seven for extra bases, and worked six walks. FSU left 10 runners on base, which is something they can’t afford to do against better teams.

It was good to see the young players respond to the early adversity, especially after FSU suffered its first loss on yesterday. They'll face another top 10 opponent on Saturday night when they face No. 7 UCLA.

The Bruins will play No. 3 Tennessee at 4 p.m. before facing the Noles at 7 p.m. The game will air on ESPN+, and will be another big time environment for the young players to shine. FSU still has a couple of holes in its offensive lineup. It'll be interesting to see how long Coach Lonni Alameda continues to play certain players. Make sure you tune in on Saturday night.
