Florida State football is back in the bad graces of the football gods once again, as wide receiver Lawayne McCoy will be entering the transfer portal.

When seeing the post by On3's Hayes Fawcett, it is mentioned that McCoy's agency tells him of the news. That seems to be important to note since NIL discussions have been at the center stage of this transfer portal window.
This comes shortly after the Seminoles grabbed Auburn quarterback transfer Ashton Daniels in the portal. When McCoy arrived in Tallahassee, fans were extremely excited since he was a highly-touted four-star prospect out of Miami.
Lawayne McCoy potentially going to the portal stings
The Seminoles had to hold off the hometown team, the Miami Hurricanes, when head football coach Mario Cristobal was known as a great recruiter. However, a lot has changed for McCoy since he signed with Florida State in the 2024 recruiting class. The entire wide receiver core in the 2024 class has left the Seminoles: Lawayne McCoy, Elijah Moore, Camdon Frier, and BJ Gibson.
The position coach who recruited him (Ron Dugans) is no longer employed by Florida State, so he has had a revolving door at the quarterback position with DJ Uiagalelei, Luke Kromenhoek, Brock Glenn, Thomas Castellanos, and now potentially Kevin Sperry or Ashton Daniels.
I realize that the Seminole fan base has dealt with so much adversity over the past couple of years, but who can blame McCoy for looking at other options? Florida State had talented wide receiver Duce Robinson returning for the 2026 season, so he won't be the primary focal point of the offense.
Then, Florida State has Micahi Danzy and even 2026 signee Jasen Lopez, who could be part of the rotation this upcoming season. McCoy had a productive end to last year, where fans thought that he could be a piece to build around.
However, individuals saw star true freshmen defensive linemen Mandrell and Darryll Desir enter the transfer portal recently, so nothing should shock Florida State fans anymore.
