The rankings don't mean much this time of year, it'll work itself out

Florida State baseball (19-4, 5-1 ACC) sits atop the early ACC standings after the first two weeks of conference play. The Noles swept previously ranked No. 12 Wake Forest on the road before winning a series at home against No. 10 NC State.

The only losses are against No. 9 Auburn, Nebraska, No. 23 Florida, and No. 10 NC State. The Noles were No. 11 nationally after sweeping Wake Forest, so FSU fans thought the Noles would rise higher in the national rankings after beating NC State in the fashion they did.

The Noles only moved up one spot in some polls, none in others, but moved up two spots in the NCBWA Poll:

It’s great to have the national ranking recognition, but it doesn’t really mean much this early in the season. In fact, if FSU goes to Jacksonville and loses against Florida on Tuesday night for the second time? Florida lost a series against High Point before beating FSU a couple of weeks ago and got swept by Alabama this weekend.

The Noles have plenty of tough games left to make their case as the postseason approaches. They need to focus on winning weekend series as they have over the past two weeks. It would be great if they could find a way to avenge the previous loss to Florida, because that hurts the perception of the ACC if its perceived best team can’t beat a Florida team with some bad losses.

FSU will have top 10 matchups against Virginia and Georgia Tech in the near future, provided they maintain their level of play. If FSU can win those series, coupled with what they’ve already done? They’ll have a great shot to be a top-eight seed in the postseason.

The Noles will travel to Jacksonville to face the Florida Gators on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The game will air on the SEC Network.
