I thought FSU football coaches were done adding to its 2025 high school recruiting class after National Signing Day in the first week of February.

There was one more somewhat realistic option, but that seems to have faded by the wayside.

However, that didn't stop FSU from accepting a commitment from an unknown dual-threat quarterback named Gavin Markey on Monday.

Markey announced his commitment on his social media page.

Markey announced his commitment on his social media page. Why would FSU accept a commitment from a guy with only three offers from very small schools? Why didn't he receive offers from more colleges?

Markey is 6'2" and 235 pounds. He completed 54 percent of his passes for 1,547 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions last fall and had 224 carries for 1,660 yards and 24 touchdowns. He hails from Jefferson High School, which is about an hour northeast of Atlanta.

Why would FSU accept this commitment at this stage?

I think it comes down to the roster expansion to 105 spots instead of 85. Markey is a solid fit for Gus Malzahn's offense as a running quarterback. He is massive at 235 pounds but has some good burst with a 4.6 40-yard dash.

FSU enters the 2025 fall season with Tommy Castellanos, Brock Glenn, Kevin Sperry, and Trevor Jackson in the quarterback room. There's a good chance one of those guys isn't here by December.

FSU is still looking for its 2026 quarterback after Brady Smigiel de-committed a couple of months ago. This addition doesn't change anything from their point of view. Markey could morph transition into a running back with his size. I'm not too concerned with how many stars he has, but more about whether can he contribute in any way.

Markey visited FSU over the weekend, so it gave the coaches a chance to see him in person. They must have liked him enough knowing he could eventually help run the scout team or eventually transition to running back in an offense that likes to run the ball.
