FSU football: Two major concerns with hiring Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football reportedly will hire UCF head coach Gus Malzahn as its new offensive coordinator. The news first got reported on Saturday before the Florida game. I wrote about five major ways hiring Gus Malzahn changes the FSU offense immediately.
The reactions to the news seem hit or miss. However, I think most of that is because most fans probably kept hearing the hire would be Brennan Marion from UNLV from most of the subscription sites.
It's like in recruiting when those sites say FSU is likely to get a commitment from a player, and the player goes elsewhere, and folks go crazy blaming the staff without knowledge of what's happening behind the scenes.
I like the hire overall and understand why Mike Norvell went in that direction. Malzahn's offenses have outperformed Marion's by a good amount over the past two years via FEI opponent-adjusted advanced metrics.
However, the hire doesn't come without some concerns. After all, Malzahn resigned from a head coaching job to take the offensive coordinator role. If you're a frequent reader of my work, you know I'm going to give you information on every aspect. Let's discuss the two major concerns.
