The hits keep coming for FSU football recruiting as the lone 2025 QB commit, Trammell Jones, announced his de-commitment from the program Thursday morning. There were rumors the long-time commit was flirting with the Florida Gators over the summer, and those rumors picked up again in recent weeks.

Jones was on a radio show in Jacksonville earlier this week and confirmed his commitment to FSU, but something must have changed over the last few days.

It could be that FSU has continued talks with another 2025 four-star QB, Carter Smith. It could be that he was told Tony Tokarz may not be retained or more of the class deciding to go elsewhere. I believe FSU started communicating more with Smith in the event Jones decided to de-commit. Smith de-committed from Michigan at the end of October.

Smith is a different type of quarterback than Jones. He's slightly taller and more of a dual-threat guy. FSU could take a transfer quarterback for 2025 as well.

Either way, Jones wasn't a guy who was going to come in and start as a freshman. FSU has no high school wide receiver commits in its class and has a 2026 commit who's rated much higher than Jones in Brady Smigel.

If FSU can hold on to Smigel's commitment, get a commitment from Carter, keep one or both of Brock Glenn or Luke Kromenhoek and take a transfer quarterback for 2025, that would be ideal. FSU has to win in 2025 and Luke Kromenhoek needs another year to develop before he's ready to start. I think it's more likely he stays than Brock Glenn at this point.

If Jones flips to the Florida Gators it doesn't look great for perception. However, he'll sit behind DJ Lagway for the next two years, so he'll likely never impact FSU.
