FSU football coaches landed their first addition from the Spring Transfer Window on Friday, and we wrote about another target they had an interest in, which was a student who was planning to visit campus this weekend.
That target, Cincinnati WR Tony Johnson, arrived on campus Saturday, but FSU brought another transfer player in for a visit, according to Chris Nee at Noles247.
The other player is East Tennessee State's Jaylen King. I've already seen some reactions on social media to the news, so I thought it would be best to explain the purpose behind the move.
FSU has three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Tommy Castellanos, Brock Glenn, and Kevin Sperry. Former walk-on Trever Jackson entered the transfer portal and found a home with Arkansas.
FSU will have a walk-on join the program this summer, but FSU needs a quarterback with some college experience for depth to run practices efficiently.
King isn't a guy they'd have to spend money on like that, as he's been in the portal for months. He's a dual-threat guy who's 6'3" and 210 pounds and would essentially replace Trever Jackson on the roster.
It's not like the coaching staff would add him to the roster (if they take him at all) as someone expected to compete for the starting job with Tommy Castellanos this year. He could also potentially play running back in a pinch.
As college football programs move from 85 to 105 roster limits, we'll likely see more things like this.
It's not like Mike Norvell and Gus Malzahn don't know how to manage a roster, and this move is easy to follow with the departure of Jackson. FSU expects to have a defensive back and offensive lineman to visit over the next few days. Their moves have been few but calculated in the Spring Transfer Window, but it's clear they have a plan based on who they have targeted.
