Former FSU redshirt freshman kicker Jake Weinberg entered the transfer portal after it opened, which surprised some Florida State fans because he had a mediocre season in 2025. He made 12 of 19 field goals and was only 4 of 9 over the final four games.
Weinberg was praised for his strong leg in the preseason, but lacked the consistency needed when it mattered. FSU added an experienced transfer kicker from Oklahoma State to replace him, Gabe Panikowski.
However, Weinberg ruffled some feathers when the news broke that he planned to transfer to the arch-rival Miami Hurricanes, although FSU fans may have gotten the last laugh because Miami took another field goal kicker from the portal who has more success and experience:
BREAKING: Florida State and Northwestern transfer kickers Jake Weinberg and Jack Olsen have committed to Miami, source told @On3https://t.co/RlUbB6EMhS pic.twitter.com/zNd3fZ6f1A

FSU fans wish Jake Weinberg the worst of luck in Miami
I can assure you, Olsen didn’t transfer to Miami to be the backup. He made 19 of 21 field goal attempts last season and was 7 of 10 in 2024. He only has one year of eligibility remaining, and Weinberg has already burned his redshirt sitting behind All-American kicker Ryan Fitzgerald at FSU in 2024.
It looks like he’s transferred to Miami to be the backup kicker. FSU fans hope this is another case of a former FSU player transferring to Miami and suffering defeat after defeat against FSU, like former FSU basketball player Matthew Cleveland.
I suppose Weinberg could win the job at Miami in 2027 if he chooses to stay, but Miami uses the portal so much that they might portal over him again if they can find someone better.
Weinberg’s inconsistency won’t be missed in Tallahassee, I promise you.
