The Miami Hurricanes opened their 2025 season with a big 27-24 win over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Hurricanes were slight underdogs going into the contest at home against an opponent they have a lot of history with.
Season openers have so many variables that it’s hard to predict who will win some of these games. Admittedly, I was surprised Miami won the game, but I think it was more about Notre Dame’s lack of offense than how good Miami was. It was a fairly even context on paper, but Notre Dame had two turnovers and still only lost by a field goal with just over a minute remaining in the game.
Regardless, it was a good win for Miami. However, Miami legendary wide receiver Michael Irvin had to speak like typical Miami fans and former players do when they actually win a big game:
Yall did US wrong last year and NOW IT’S………… pic.twitter.com/tIon5cSSGB

Sir, who did Miami wrong last year? If anything, Miami was its own worst enemy in 2024. They lost three games, and it easily could have been five.
They had the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick at QB and an experienced wide receiver group. They had one of the better offensive lines. However, the defense was hot trash and couldn’t stop my high school team.
Miami didn’t make the ACCCG, lost its bowl game(as usual), and didn’t deserve a spot in the College Football Playoff. What is he talking about here? We’ll get to see how good Miami is over the next few weeks. They play a stretch of South Florida, Florida, FSU, and Louisville between September 13th-October 17th. If they can go undefeated or even suffer one loss, I’ll have to tip my hat. However, I’m still not sold on Miami as a real contender yet.
