FSU football lost its top commit from the 2026 recruiting class a couple of months ago when Brady Smigiel pulled back on his pledge committing in mid-July 2024.

Smigiel cited a change in the offensive coordinator position, with FSU firing Alex Atkins and hiring Gus Malzahn, as the primary reason. It was probably more with FSU going 2-10 and him having to go from one coast to another to play college football.

Smigiel would have fit Gus Malzahn's offense fine. If you can pass, Malzahn isn't afraid to throw it. Plus, look at how many NFL quarterbacks have added some running ability to their games to find success.

I digress. The most recent predictions have Brady Smigiel going to the Washington Huskies. It makes sense because that was the first school Smigiel visited in mid-December before de-committing in January. He also visited Washington for their Junior Day last week.

FSU has yet to find his replacement in the 2026 recruiting class, although they sent a flurry of offers to some top guys the day after Smigiel left the class.

However, FSU coaches received some good news this week when Landon Duckworth announced he would take an official visit to FSU in mid-June. Ironically, Duckworth now ranks higher than Smigiel in the composite rankings as the No. 6 QB and No. 53 player overall in 2026. Smigiel is the No. 7 QB and No. 67 player.

FSU is battling some heavy hitters from Georgia, Ole Miss, and South Carolina. Duckworth is a former South Carolina commit but has a great relationship with Gus Malzahn.

What I'm really interested to see is if Duckworth makes it to campus BEFORE that official visit in June. If he does, that would be a major positive for the Noles. How crazy would it be for FSU to lose a quarterback the caliber of Smigiel, only to replace him with someone who likely is an even better fit for the offense and is not that far away from home? Stay tuned!
