Florida State's 2027 recruiting class is not where the fan base wants it to be, where they rank as the 50th-best in the country, according to 247Sports Composite. When you look at the recruiting, you might think that we are discussing Florida Atlantic or Florida International. However, that is the Seminoles that we are referring to.
With that said, it shouldn't be all negative, as only the official visitor weekend has happened in Tallahassee, where they landed three-star defensive lineman Eric Vaulx Jr. It was a solid pickup for the program, as Vaulx Jr. can play as a pass rusher and on the interior.
It is difficult to generate much excitement because the fan base is tired of getting their hopes up. The Seminoles beat Alabama to begin the year, and then they stumbled down the stretch and lost to Florida in the finale, not even making a bowl game.
Mekhi Williams backing off his pledge hurts the hearts of Seminole fans
The more frustrating part is that four-star defensive back Mekhi Williams backed off his pledge to Florida State. He officially visited Wisconsin during the weekend on May 29th. Williams had been committed to the Seminoles since March 2025.
It is embarrassing portion of this is that the defensive back is receiving crystal ball predictions in favor of the Badgers. He was rumored to be trending towards Miami and LSU, and now Wisconsin, during his recruitment, so his backing out of the recruiting class wasn't a shock. Mekhi Williams will be announcing his decision live on the CBS Sports College Football YouTube channel tomorrow (June 3rd) at 5:00 PM EST between Wisconsin, Nebraska, and LSU.

This was a quick development as Williams was supposed to visit Florida State this upcoming weekend before he cancelled the trip. Even though defensive back isn't necessarily a position that the Seminoles should be putting all of their eggs into one basket for, it is a top 200 prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite.
Florida State has to get out of its own way this recruiting class. Teams like Miami and Florida are catching up, and the Seminoles need to stay afloat.
