Florida State football has seen its fair share of struggles over the years, which some individuals blame on the quarterback position.
The Seminoles had 19 straight victories thanks to former signal-caller Jordan Travis, who is no longer in Tallahassee. The coaching staff has tried to replace his production with guys like DJ Uialgalelei and Thomas Castellanos from the transfer portal, but that hasn't worked.
Head coach Mike Norvell is responsible for the play-calling duties in 2026, and the competition could be between Kevin Sperry and Ashton Daniels. Malachi Marshall could also be in play, too, if they wait to announce the starter in fall camp.
Florida State needs to find its quarterback of the future in the 2027 cycle
There is so much discussion on the current quarterbacks on the roster, but the Seminoles have to continue to obtain homegrown talent for their team. Kevin Sperry is a former four-star prospect from the 2025 cycle, but they haven't had the best luck in terms of high school quarterback recruits.
One of the more publicized misses was Luke Kromenhoek, who played at Florida State for one season in 2024, and then transferred to Mississippi State and is now at South Florida. The Seminoles have ventured into the transfer portal options that have not panned out.
They went to DJ Uiagalelei, Thomas Castellanos, and now Ashton Daniels. They have to find a way to get multiple-year starters at the position. The arch-rival Miami Hurricanes have made a name for themselves in getting transfers, but they just landed a top-three quarterback option in the 2027 cycle with Israel Abrams.
While I didn't think Abrams was a realistic get for Florida State, this puts more pressure on them to land four-star Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV from Vero Beach, Florida, who recently visited Ohio State, and Notre Dame is also involved in the recruitment.
If Monds IV doesn't commit to Florida State, they could be scrambling for options, but I believe that three-star Logan Flaherty should be the play here. The Port Charlotte, Florida native is currently pledged to the UCF Knights, and has visited the Seminoles several times.
When evaluating his film, Flaherty is a guy who is a dual-sport athlete, playing baseball and was very productive during his junior season, where he had 2,636 passing yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also had 595 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground (according to MaxPreps).
There seems to be a high level of interest between Monds IV, but he keeps visiting other schools, which feels strange. The Seminoles cannot afford to miss out on their top options and have to go back into the transfer portal yet again.
