Based on spring scrimmages, FSU may not announce a starting QB until fall camp

It's the smart thing to do even if FSU knows who the starter will be earlier.

Florida State football held its second scrimmage of spring camp on Saturday, and head coach Mike Norvell spoke with the media afterwards. It sounds like he was happy with how things went for the most part, though I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on most of the results.

It sounds like the defense had the better day between the two units, but that’s to be expected when the offensive line is still learning to work together, and FSU has a ton of inexperienced receivers and tight ends getting lots of reps. Proven starters like Duce Robinson and Micahi Danzy are limited because FSU coaches know what they can do, and Danzy is actively running track.

However, when it comes to the quarterback position, it looks like FSU is in no hurry to name a starter.

Excerpts from Mike Norvell's post-scrimmage presser about the quarterback situation.

There was good and bad. I've got to go back and watch. Each quarterback had a couple decisions they have to learn from. There were good plays and some explosive plays later—guys pushed the ball down the field.

There were also situations where it didn't matter who was playing quarterback.....we've got to be better in surrounding them to put them in better situations.

Through the first nine days, we have a very competitive room....with talented guys. Kevin is continuing to grow in what he's being asked to do....driving the ball with more confidence and what it needs to look like. Ashton has done a great job learning the offense, with some finer details that he can grow from and he's done really well with the bulk of spring ball. I'm please with his progression and where he's at.

We'll see as we go through spring practice where things stack up. We'll have 15 practices. If we're ready to make a decision, we will be willing to. If it stretches into fall camp, that's something we'll evaluate as continue to get closer.

It’s basically what I said before: the offensive line is still a work in progress, and a lot of young receivers out there are likely playing inconsistently.

If we think about it, Mike Norvell naming a starter doesn’t help in any way. The longer he allows this “quarterback battle” to keep going, the more he’ll likely get out of both Kevin Sperry and Ashton Daniels. It sounds like both guys are making progress, but also have room to grow.

Their continued play at practice will help the players determine who the starter should be by the time we  get into fall camp. I expect FSU to wait until fall to name a starter based on where everything is now, unless one of the two guys makes it undeniable that he’s the guy. However, that’ll likely be tough with so many young players getting reps at important positions.
