Florida State baseball can’t erase the series sweep on the road against Stanford last week, but a series win and sweep over the Pitt Panthers would go a long way in solidifying a regional host opportunity in the postseason.
Florida State’s Friday night game against Pitt was postponed until Saturday due to inclement weather, so the teams played a doubleheader. FSU won both games comfortably behind good starting pitching and an FSU offense that took advantage of a mediocre pitching staff and suspect defense.
I wrote before the series that FSU would have a good chance to win the series or sweep if they got good starting pitching. Wes Mendes fired a complete game five-hitter to help FSU coast to a 10-1 win in the first game. Mendes had seven strikeouts, zero walks, five hits, and one earned run.
Freshman John Stuetzer continued to ride his hot bat, going 2-5 with four RBI, including a home run. Nathan Cmeyla went 2-4, Gabe Fraser went 2-3, and Cal Fisher had two RBI. FSU batters only struck out six times and walked once.

It was good to see the team rebound after how they played last week. They played well in all three phases on Saturday.
The second game saw FSU jump out to a 5-0 lead for Trey Beard, but Pittsburgh responded with a four-run spot in the top of the third. It didn’t look like Beard was going to make it out of the fifth inning, but he forced a huge double play ball to get out of a jam. He finished with six innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs, two walks, and eight strikeouts. John Abraham pitched the final three innings, allowing two hits, one earned run, two walks, and five strikeouts in the 8-5 win.
Hunters Carns with 2-4 with a home run and a double. Nathan Cmeyla stayed hot, going 2-4 with three RBI. Gabe Fraser went 3-4 with two RBI and a double. FSU batters only struck out seven times and walked three.
This is the model FSU needs if they want to be successful with the current roster. They need the starting pitchers to go at least five innings, and the FSU offense to limit strikeouts, while scoring some runs. It’s a tale as old as time. If they don’t beat themselves, they can beat a lot of teams.
They need to get the sweep on Sunday to help soften the series sweep loss against Stanford last week.
