Florida State football is not in a good spot as a program right now, as the Seminoles have suffered two straight losing seasons. The 2025 campaign started with a bang as they beat Alabama by a score of 31-17 in the opener.
Fans were thinking that the Seminoles could be serious College Football Playoff contenders, but the end of the year reminded individuals to let the games play out before making any bold predictions, as Florida State lost seven of its last nine games.
The road game against Stanford was the point of no return for head coach Mike Norvell, as many wanted him fired. The administration still expressed its confidence in him, either because of the high buyout number or how he turned it around in 2022 and 2023, as they announced that they would be retaining him for 2026.
It is Year 7 for him in Tallahassee, and at some point, Florida State just needs to win football games. The fan base, local businesses, and administration demand that the results be positive in 2026. I mentioned earlier that On3's JD PicKell discussed a report by Athlon that mentioned that Florida State doesn't have the booster support that people think that they do.
DraftKings Sportsbook releases the point spread for Florida State versus New Mexico State
It could be because of the lack of energy at Florida State since Mike Norvell is employed. Nonetheless, the Seminoles have to put their heads down and go to work. The first game on the docket is New Mexico State on Saturday, August 29th.
The Seminoles are listed as 28.5-point home favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook against the Aggies.
This point spread is a bit disrespectful to Florida State. While I understand that the Seminoles have underperformed six of the past eight seasons, this is a situation where I thought that they would be favored by over 30 points at home.
New Mexico State went 4-8 last season, but the Aggies did have four losses that were decided by one possession. They did play one Power Four opponent last season, Tennessee, who they lost to by a score of 42-9. This is likely closer to the point spread that the contest should be around.
Nonetheless, this is a Florida State team that had to overhaul its roster with recruits and transfers, so there will have to be some time for the squad to gel together. With that said, head coach Mike Norvell and this roster should have no problem with New Mexico State.
