Florida State's final transfer portal addition is perfect puzzle piece for Luke Loucks to close strong

I like the fit a lot.

Florida State head coach Luke Loucks and the coaching staff knew that FSU had one more spot to fill from the transfer portal and needed a versatile big man who could impact the game in several ways. It didn’t take them long to identify their guy, get him on campus, and get the commitment.

Wake Forest forward Cooper Schwieger committed to Florida State on Thursday night to become the final puzzle piece for the staff, and I think it’s a great fit.

Schwieger played at Valparaiso for two years before transferring to Wake Forest last season. He saw his playing time and production drop significantly, and some folks will point to that as a red flag. However, I see it differently. Wake Forest didn’t maximize his strengths and obviously cut his playing time by 12 minutes, compared to what he did at his previous stop.

This is great scouting, realizing that he may not have reached his potential at Wake Forest, but knowing he could be a great fit in the system at FSU.

Here’s what sticks out. He still shot 50.4 percent overall, 73.7 percent from the free-throw line, and 34.3 percent from the three-point line. The latter would have been third-best on Florida State’s team from last season. He’s a capable rebounder and led Wake Forest with 20 blocks, which would have been third-best on last year’s team.

Luke Loucks preached about wanting a guy who could put the ball in the basket and needing more shooters. Schwieger and Sebastian Rancik are two bigs who can stretch the floor, shoot the ball well from the three-point line, and will not be liabilities at the free-throw line.

Schwieger checks in at 6’10” and 235 pounds. FSU will have at least two big men who’ll be 6’10” or more, which is the size they lacked last year. Schwieger is a player who could really flourish in Luke Loucks’ system. I think it’s a great addition and a perfect puzzle piece to finish an excellent transfer portal haul.
