Chase Williams was too inconsistent

Florida State coaches must be having exit meetings, or players already knew they were planning to enter the transfer portal. Florida State outfielder Chase Williams is the second player today to announce plans to enter. Williams was an enigma for Florida State fans.

He would do things that were mind-blowing at times, and other times, make decisions or do things that would blow your mind for the wrong reasons. The baserunning miscues alone made fans want to pull their hair out.

Williams is ultra-talented with elite speed. However, he always seemed to get hurt by the most minor things, and he was way too inconsistent at the plate and on defense. He was not an elite outfielder, considering how much speed he has.

Williams could be electric, but could also look like he shouldn't even be on the field in the batter's box at times.

One of the most frustrating things about Williams was his propensity to swing out of his shoes like he was a power hitter, when he should have been trying to put the ball in play and use his speed to his advantage. He struck out in 28 percent of his at-bats in 2026 and only stole 17 out of 22 bases. His on-base percentage was only .349, which wasn’t good enough to bat lead-off, and he didn’t make contact enough to bat second.

While his speed was his biggest calling card, he couldn't get on base enough to maximize the talent. Williams was a player who couldn’t figure out his strengths and play to them for whatever reason. When it looked like he was starting to figure it out, he'd get hurt or have some type of setback. He’ll have one year of eligibility remaining.

The Noles will likely hit the transfer portal to acquire a player who's more consistent at the plate and in the field. They could revisit the JUCO ranks, as that's where Williams came from. I wouldn't expect Williams to be the last name to enter the portal. There should be a few more if Link Jarrett is serious about re-tooling this roster.
