Florida State head coach Mike Norvell spoke with the media following Saturday’s third and final scrimmage of spring camp.

This scrimmage is usually the closest to an actual game, unlike the first two, where they create lots of different situations.

Norvell said they ran well over 100 plays, and the FSU offense got the better of the defense overall. It was the first time they consistently got the better of the defense in spring camp, which is usually what you’d want to see.

Florida State will likely be better than they were last year, but will the record reflect it?

FSU relied heavily on young players and limited the playing time of proven veterans like Duce Robinson. However, when it came to the two most important positions on the offense, we already knew the answers to the questions.

I wrote last week that Florida State would likely wait until sometime in the fall to name a starting quarterback, and Mike Norvell wasn’t ready to name a starter after the third scrimmage. He complimented both Ashton Daniels and Kevin Sperry on their similar skillsets, and mentioned they both managed the game well, with a few plays they’d like to have back. Both quarterbacks extended some plays and hit some explosive plays.

When it comes to the offensive line, they have a good idea of what they are working with, but some positions still have an open competition.

This information should come as no surprise. There’s no benefit to naming starters right now in either unit. They know what each player can do by now and can tailor a game plan once they name the starter.

It sounded like Norvell has some confidence in the running game, and mentioned Ousmane Kromah ran hard as expected. Overall, I think this offense has the potential to be improved over last year, especially if they can reduce the turnovers and improve their red zone efficiency.
