Florida State football's 2027 recruiting class needs some work after they are currently sitting with the 45th-best haul, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. This is not even close to where the fan base and the program as a whole wants to be.
The college football landscape has changed. Fans used to make fun of head coach Mike Norvell's approach to using the transfer portal, and how it was not sustainable, but some teams around the country rely on it from year to year.
With that said, high school recruiting is still important because there is a solid chance that they could develop into multi-year starters for a program, and it would allow the school to invest its resources instead of paying top dollar for a transfer.
The story of Logan Flaherty's recruitment was an interesting one
The recruiting class for the 2027 cycle looks to be just getting started, and the fan base wants something to create a buzz to counteract the positive energy from arch-rival Miami and Florida. On3's Steve Wiltfong provided a positive update on Saturday afternoon about Florida State's recruiting efforts as he logged in a prediction for three-star quarterback Logan Flaherty from Port Charlotte, Florida.
Flaherty was someone whose parents both went to Florida State, so the talented prospect knows what the Seminoles have to offer. He has been to the campus multiple times, and Florida State was even in line to acquire his services before he chose to pledge to UCF.
The high school recruiting game is strange at times, where Flaherty committed to the Knights, then elected to back off his pledge, and lastly was thought to be trending to Rutgers just to be in Florida State's favor now.
Are you caught up?
No? Good because we aren't either in today's landscape of high school recruiting. Nonetheless, Florida State's top target in four-star Wonderful "Champ" Monds IV disappointingly chose to commit to Notre Dame after his first-ever visit there, which left the Seminoles to a secondary option in Flaherty. This isn't to say that the Port Charlotte signal-caller is not good, because I like his skill set.
Monds IV was their first choice, but life is all about facing adversity and having a plan. This is a good sign that they didn't settle for not bringing in a quarterback and trying the transfer portal market again next offseason. This will hopefully be a full room of youngsters battling in 2027, even though Mike Norvell hasn't developed a high school quarterback during his tenure at Florida State.
The quarterback position has not been kind to the Seminoles, other than when head coach Mike Norvell benefited from having former signal-caller Jordan Travis. He will go down as one of the better ones in school history to ever do it.
The Seminoles have gone to the portal for the past three offseasons to get their starting quarterback, and the jury is still out on Ashton Daniels, but it looks like Kevin Sperry, Malachi Marshall, and Jaden O'Neal will be battling for the job in 2027.
If Florida State lands Flaherty in the near future, this would be an important piece to ensure that the recruiting class grows and they have a productive summer.
