Florida State basketball used to keep seven-footers on the roster when Leonard Hamilton was doing his thing in Tallahassee. However, I’m not sure Florida State has had a player in recent years like the one they officially signed on Wednesday.
Marcis Ponder, a top-40 player nationally, had been committed to Florida State since July 2025. He finally made it official with the Noles announcing him as a signee on social media:

Marcis Ponder should be a high school player that can be a game changer for Luke Loucks.
A lot of young people have probably forgotten what a young Shaquille O’Neal looked like when he first got to the NBA. He was 7’0” and nearly 300 pounds and would try to take the rim off the backboard every time he dunked a basketball.
That’s the imagery I get when I watch highlights of Marcis Ponder. He’s not quite as heavy as O’Neal, but he’s 7’0” and 285 pounds. He should immediately provide a presence in the paint that Florida State hasn’t had in years. That was one of the major weaknesses of the Florida State team last year in Luke Loucks ’ first season.
Teams didn’t fear taking the ball to the rack because Florida State didn’t have a rim protector. Florida State got killed on the boards because they didn’t have someone who could make a difference there. Those are the two biggest areas where Ponder can impact the quickest.
He'll need to be in excellent shape to get up and down the court since Luke Loucks likes to play lots of possessions. Ponder is one of eight high school players signed, along with five players from the transfer portal. The high school class ranks top-10 via the composite rankings, which has the Florida State fan base as excited as we’ve seen since Florida State was among the elites in the 2019-20 season with Leonard Hamilton.
It’ll be interesting to see how quickly the team can gel together, but Ponder is the top high school player signed in the class.
