Florida State football has not been shy about its approach to adding defensive linemen this offseason. They acquired nine defensive linemen in the 2026 cycle, which is not what the Seminoles typically do. They usually add via the transfer portal.

Florida State thought that they had a productive transfer portal haul with pieces such as James Williams, given that he was reunited with his old Nebraska coaches. It was a bright spot for the Seminoles' defensive line last year.

Fans see the arch-rival Miami Hurricanes have success in the trenches and want the Florida State Seminoles to follow a similar pattern. However, the times have changed, and it isn't all about getting all of the top-tier high school prospects because they could easily transfer out after a year.

Malachi Brown is an intriguing JUCO option for the Seminoles to pursue

The coaching staff is trying a different strategy this time around. The Seminoles decided to bring Class of 2026 JUCO defensive tackle Malachi Brown from Monterey, California, on an official campus visit. After the trip, he was offered by Florida State.

Brown is listed at 6'2" and 300 pounds. Florida State was able to retain the Desir Twins and Kevin Wynn this offseason after they intended on entering the transfer portal, but they need more veteran help on the defensive line.

Brown graduates on May 22nd. As a result, he wants to decide before that date to ensure that he has his commitment plan solidified. While Brown likely won't be a starter at defensive tackle, he could be a rotational piece that Florida State could lean on and give the true freshmen more time to develop.

The Seminoles had a 5-7 record last season, which was shocking because they defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide in the opener. Many thought that they would be competing for a championship at the end of the year with their performance.
