Florida State and Mike Norvell cannot afford to lose its LB commit to Mississippi State

This should not be happening for the Florida State Seminoles.

This is a big recruiting weekend for the Florida State Seminoles to construct their 2027 recruiting class to their liking. The class is ranked outside the top 50, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, so there is work to be done.

The Seminoles have three-star quarterback commit Logan Flaherty in town for the weekend to help bring home some new prospects to the fold, such as four-star wide receiver Sean Green and three-star Marquis Fennell.

With that said, this weekend is also an opportunity for the coaching staff to solidify commitments and shut down recruitments with prospects in the class. One recruit who worries me is four-star linebacker commit Gregory Batson from Leesburg, Georgia.

Getting Gregory Batson to shut things down this weekend should be priority number one for Ernie Sims

Batson has been committed to the Seminoles since November 2025, but Mississippi State is pushing for a flip in his pledge. High school recruiting is always a whirlwind, but Florida State has already been dealt horrible news with four-star defensive back Mekhi Williams de-committing from the Seminoles and flipping to Wisconsin (which also isn't in a good spot as a program).

They cannot have Batson go too, especially to a Mississippi State squad that hasn't been productive over the past couple of years. The linebacker is expected to visit next weekend officially, and I understand that he might just want to experience other campuses and enjoy his recruitment process. Still, Florida State needs to find a way to shut the deal on this recruitment.

With that said, assistant coach Ernie Sims doesn't have many prospects who view Florida State as a top school. They could make a move with three-star option Olrick Johnson III from Kennesaw, Georgia. However, it probably wouldn't be the most popular pick amongst the fan base.

Frederrick Ford is someone who is listed as a linebacker, but he is more of an outside linebacker/defensive end. To me, the Seminoles almost need to land Johnson II and keep Batson this weekend, then pursue unranked CJ Ohuabunwa from Norcross, Georgia, when he officially visits on the weekend of June 19th.

Understandably, Florida State has quality linebackers that they really like in the 2026 cycle, with four-star Izayia Williams, three-star Daylen Green, three-star Karon Maycock, three-star Noah LaVallee, and three-star JUCO Chris Thomas. However, the Seminoles still have to consistently bring in talent to ensure that they continue having pieces for the future.
