Florida State will need to hit the transfer portal once again for the 2026 season unless they plan to enter the season with no experience and depth. It looks like Gus Malzahn will return, which means he’ll likely entertain another dual-threat quarterback to run the show.
One of the best dual-threat options possible announced he’ll enter the transfer portal when it opens on January 2nd. The only problem is that he likely already had a new home.
USF quarterback Byrum Brown will likely follow his head coach, Alex Golesh, to the Auburn Tigers. Brown played for Golesh the past few seasons, although Brown was recruited to USF by Charlie Wies Jr., the new offensive coordinator at LSU with Lane Kiffin.
USF quarterback Byrum Brown intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal, he tells ESPN. Brown accounted for 92 career touchdowns – 61 pass/31 rush – which will be the most among returning players in college football in 2026. He's repped by @shawnodare of Rosenhaus Sports. pic.twitter.com/uirQO2f0zY

The North Carolina native was a three-star recruit from a smaller high school west of Raleigh, North Carolina, when he committed to South Florida. Gus Malzahn offered Brown out of high school shortly after becoming the head coach at UCF in early 2021.

Brown would be a great fit for FSU. He has experience, production, and the ability to run an offense similar to Malzhan’s. He’s a bigger and more accurate passer than Thomas Castellanos. However, he’ll likely have a high price tag and the connections to others he’s actually played for. It looks like FSU has concentrated on Old Dominion’s Colton Joseph at the position, although he’s another version of Thomas Castellanos for my money. The good news is, FSU should keep its options open as more quality options announce plans to enter the transfer portal when it opens in a little over a week.
If they could somehow pull a miracle and land a player like Brown, it would change things instantly.
