Breaking down Izayia Williams' unpredictable track back to Florida State

The blue-chip linebacker returns to the 2026 recruiting class....and we hope he stays

The best way to describe Izayia Williams' recruitment is unpredictable. So when the top in-state linebacker prospect made his second commitment to FSU today (and sixth verbal pledge) overall, no one saw it coming.

Taking this strictly from a player standpoint, the upside with Williams is amazing. He has as good of a combination of physicality and athleticism that you'll see from a linebacker in this class. Assuming he fully recovers from the knee injury he suffered this spring, Williams is a legitimate high-end blue-chip prospect and his high composite national ranking is well deserved.

But...yeah, nothing Williams has done on the field will draw attention away from his wild recruitment, which has included six commitments to five different programs. Williams is on his second stint with FSU and there have been pledges to Florida, Ole Miss, Syracuse and Louisville as well.

Williams' recruiting history is something that will follow him

I put in a phone call to my longtime friend Charles Fishbein of Elite Scouting Services. He's probably watched Williams play four or five times and loves what he does on the field, but he said that the recruiting history concerns him.

"Corey, he's made six different commitments. I couldn't touch him at this point because who's advising him to do this?" Fishbein said. "No one forces you to commit, and this has made him look like a joke. Is he going to come into a program ready to work or is he going to want to leave as soon as things get tough?"

It's certainly a question worth exploring. Williams says he is shutting down his recruitment, and we all want to believe him, but is anyone going to be surprised if this song and dance continues up until it's time to sign somewhere?

My thoughts: Last team with the ball wins

Williams has had a bit of a checkered recruitment up to this point, and if you want to hold that against him, fine. But FSU is in the driver's seat at this point. He still has to take an official visit to Tallahassee and, with a knee injury that's likely to keep Williams sidelined for his senior season, there will be programs that will just decide to move on because they can't see him play this year.

Also, let me remind you, this roster needs more talent! And Williams is as talented as any linebacker in the country. If he wants to be at FSU and the Seminoles are really the team that's in his heart, this staff should embrace him with open arms.
