Amaree Williams’ role at FSU comes into focus: Tight end

So far it appears that Williams will be on offense full time and that's a good thing

One of the big stories going into training camp was how FSU was going to use sophomore athlete Amaree Williams. There was talk about him making a full-time shift to defensive end/edge rusher, his projected position out of high school.

Then it became more of a hybrid two-way role where he would play some tight end and also cross-training on defense. As camp approached, Williams' role on defense would most likely be a third-down pass-rush specialist.

So we've gotten a lot of mixed messages and the best way to figure out exactly where Williams fit in on this team was to wait and see how things shake down. But with a week into camp, it looks like we're starting to get an answer.

Williams is a tight end. And there's a good chance he'll be a starting tight end with Randy Pittman. And that's fine, especially if that is where Williams is shining at the most. The staff has spoken highly of Williams' work ethic and physical development.

""He's a big dude. Last year, this time, he was 215 pounds on a good day. After practice, he was probably 210. Now he's holding 230-plus, 235. That's the biggest thing—just the physical growth and development. He looks to me like he's still kept his ability to run routes. He made an adjustment on the ball today.""

Wherever he lines up, Williams will be a problem for opponents

I understand a lot of fans want to see Williams play in this amazing two-way role where he gets 25 catches, 450 yards, five touchdowns while also getting six sacks and 13 tackles for loss. But that isn't happening. It's a great thing that Williams has so many tools to use, and as we're seeing, it comes into use when one of his two positions is dealing with the injury bug.

Right now, FSU is a little thin at the tight end position. Landen Thomas and Chase Loftin are dealing with injuries. We hope they aren't significant, but Mike Norvell keeps injury news close to the vest, so we REALLY don't know. They might not be available for Alabama, or they might be very limited. The fact that Williams has played offense primarily in camp through the firstweek, gives me the idea that there might be some concerns.

Regardless of whether he lines up at tight end full-time or switches back to part-time defense, Williams is a major piece of FSU football in 2025 and wherever he lines up, he's going to be a problem for the opposition.
