Week 5 has officially come and gone for Florida State, and the win was easily the most impressive performance the team has had this season. Coach Mike Norvell secured what could be the signature win of the 2026 season over Virginia as talks surrounding a potential buyout of his contract have continued to build. Norvell might have quieted some of those talks with the win, but there are still major questions Norvell will need to answer.

1. Can Florida State continue to play at a high level consistently?

The Seminoles could certainly pick up a few more wins this season, even with inconsistent play, solely due to the talent present, but better, stronger opponents will take advantage. Florida State gave Virginia early opportunities to generate a lead, and things of that nature cannot happen against teams like Miami.

Florida State looked incredibly improved through the three quarters against Virginia despite the difference in experience between the two teams. Norvell proved this roster has plenty of talent, and certainly enough to take down teams that realistically looked better on paper. Now, the next challenge for Norvell is to find a way to get the team to play this way each game.

Defeating Virginia was a test of sorts as Florida State needed to prove that changes could be made in short periods of time, but each game this season will serve as a test. Louisville is a more explosive team through the air, which is something the Seminoles have struggled with. Norvell does not need to wait long to go out on the field against and attempt to produce the same result from Week 5.

2. What is the ceiling for this current Florida State team?

When breaking down all five games this season individually, the Seminoles have looked like a different team each time out on the field. Even through four-quarter samples, Florida State has struggled to produce a consistent product regardless of the opponent. Norvell delivered his most polished product of the year against Virginia, and now the next test for the coach will be to find a way to continue to replicate that success.

Florida State has gone from fully collapsing against a ranked Alabama team, to struggling to put away Central Arkansas, to dominating an experienced Virginia team in the matter of three weeks. It is extremely hard to figure out what this team is going to do next this season, which begs the question: How good could this team potentially be?

You could sit here and think about it all day, but the reality is that Norvell is the one responsible for finding an answer. Depending on what his answer is, it could be an important clue towards what the future holds for the coach. If Norvell really only has a bowl-eligible team on his hands and not a true ACC competitor, that might say more about his spending than the funds provided by Florida State.

3. How much more needs to be done if saving his job is still possible?

The fourth question Norvell needs to answer is more of an appetizer for more questions than anything. Has the relationship between Norvell and Florida State already reached a breaking point before Week 5? Will the two sides part ways at the end of the 2026 season, regardless of where Norvell's team may finish?

Frankly, Norvell has plenty of doubt surrounding his job security that one win was never going to truly erase. The Week 5 win over Virginia is a distraction of sorts before another test against Louisville, where Norvell now needs to prove whether or not he can make sure changes stick from week to week. Florida State struggled doing so last season as the team looked different each week, resulting in inconsistent outputs in all phases.

If Norvell is going to truly make a run at saving his job this season, it will take significant improvement on top of key wins. Virginia was an extremely recognized team heading into the 2026 season, but in two weeks, the Cavaliers could be just another ACC team.

Wins over teams like Miami and Florida are the only two that realistically could be standalone statements due to the notable difference in roster spending. With losses in each of those games, Norvell's chances at truly proving Florida State can be a top team in the current landscape drop dramatically.

4. Is there a world where Florida State believes retaining Mike Norvell for the 2027 season makes sense?

As mentioned in question three, figuring out what still needs to be done to save his job presents more questions than answers for Norvell. The decision may already have been completed and now is just a matter of time, or alternatively, Norvell might still have plenty of opportunities to prove his worth once again.

Obviously, if Norvell was answering these questions himself, the answers would be pretty obvious given the buyout rumors that had been swirling. Norvell does not want to lose his job, but if the job is not being performed up to a certain standard, then the idea of buying out his contract becomes far more real.

There is no way of truly knowing what can mend the damage, but with the recent success on the recruiting trail and the response of the team in the midst of buyout rumors is impressive. Norvell certainly still has support, but is it enough support to keep him in Tallahassee?
