Last week, Florida State didn’t look dominant against two-win Pitt, but there was a good reason. The No. 4 Seminoles were without their top two receivers, Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson in the 24-7 win.
Jordan Travis managed to throw for 360 yards and a touchdown, but it may be a little harder to move the ball this week against the 6-3 Miami Hurricanes. Especially if Coleman missed his second straight game.
Head coach Mike Norvell didn’t reveal much about Coleman’s status, stating he was, “hopeful he’d be back extremely soon” following the win over Pitt.
On Wednesday, Norvell was asked about Coleman’s progress, “Great, he looks wonderful… he’s doing good. Obviously continuing to see as guys progress in the week exactly where we’ll be at, but think we’re seeing positive strides with a lot of guys.”
Yet, he refused to acknowledge a timeline for his star receiver. Coleman has turned into one of the very best players in the country since transferring to FSU from Michigan State. On the season he leads the team with 538 yards and nine touchdowns on 38 catches.
Last week against Pitt, with a severely depleted receiving corp, Ja’Khi Douglas led FSU in with six catches for 115 yards. Miami ranks 55th in passing defense, but 94th in yards per completion, so big play opportunities will be there for whoever is at receiver for the Seminoles.
To remain near the top of the College Football Playoff rankings, the Seminoles cannot afford a loss. There is plenty of urgency to get Coleman back on the field.
