Former FSU football quarterback James Blackman has dealt with adversity for much of the past few years, and the last few weeks have been no different. Blackman signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in May after going undrafted earlier this year.

The former FSU QB transferred to Arkansas State after the 2020 season. Blackman put up respectable numbers for the Red Wolves, completing 64 percent of his passes for 2,471 yards. He threw 14 touchdowns against three interceptions last year.

The Belle Glade, Florida, native got waived by the Dolphins before the first preseason game.

However, Miami QB Mike White got placed in the league’s concussion protocol, which opened a spot for Blackman to re-sign with the team.

We’ll see if Blackman can make the most of his opportunity. Blackman was a polarizing figure for most FSU football fans.

Some fans root for him because of the situation he got thrown into as a freshman that wasn’t an early enrollee, plus Jimbo Fisher quitting on the program that year. Blackman got no favors from Willie Taggart’s staff and had to deal with COVID in Mike Norvell’s first year in Tallahassee.

Blackman had four offensive coordinators and played behind one of the worst offensive lines in college football. However, he shows glimpses of his physical ability at times. He was a true Seminole and left it all on the field when he wore the garnet and gold.

Some fans dislike him because of all the losses the program endured while he was the quarterback. Sure, there were some plays he’d like to have back, but the issues ran far deeper than anything James Blackman did or didn’t do. I’ll always root for him, and I’m happy he’s getting another opportunity in the NFL.

Heck, some folks would have laughed at you a couple of years ago if you told them he would have even had these opportunities. Good on him for chasing a dream and ultimately overcoming adversity. That is something Mike Norvell preaches all the time.
