The FSU football quarterback position had a lull in consistency for several years after Jameis Winston departed the program There were some flashes here and there, but poor QB play coupled with a bad offensive line was a recipe for disaster.

That’s largely what FSU’s program was between 2018-2021. However, one of the first things Mike Norvell tried to address was the QB position.

He signed two QB nearly immediately after arriving in Tallahassee. Ironically, one of those QB’s is backup QB Tate Rodemaker, who has the potential to be the starting quarterback in 2024 after Jordan Travis departs the program.

Then there’s redshirt freshman AJ Duffy, and freshman Brock Glenn. The latter enrolling early in the spring and already drawing rave reviews from the coaching staff. I pointed out earlier Mike Norvell often gives the real in his assessments of where guys are in their development.

He spoke about former five-star receiver Hykeem Williams Friday, and mentioned he needed more consistency. However, when Norvell talks about Brock Glenn? He’s grinning from ear to ear and very complimentary of where he is in his development.

He’s gone so far as to say Glenn is ahead of where they thought he’d be. Why is Glenn’s development important? If his progression continues, he could challenge Tate Rodemaker for the starting job in 2024. If that’s the case, that allows freshman Luke Kromenhoek the opportunity to redshirt and avoid the pressures of playing as a true frosh.

It helps provide a natural progression from QB to QB, whereas, in the past, FSU got into trouble when James Blackman had to start games as a true frosh without the benefit of enrolling early in the 2017 season.

Had the QB recruiting and development been on point, things may have been better for Willie Taggart when he got to Tallahassee.

That’s not to discount AJ Duffy, as there’s time for him to make a move if he can put it together. If not, that’s where Glenn’s development becomes even more important. I know rival fans suggest FSU will suffer a major dropoff after the 2023 season.

However, the development of players like Brock Glenn that tells me the dropoff won’t be near what they think it’ll be. The guys are working in Tallahassee.
