FSU football has tons of talent and production returning for the 2023 season. It’s one of several reasons they’ll likely start the season among the top 10 teams nationally.

They had 15 All-ACC players last year and had four players selected for the All-ACC Preseason Team Wednesday.

Those players were:

  • Trey Benson-125 votes (second most offensively)
  • Johnny Wilson- 117 votes (third most offensively)
  • Jared Verse-136 votes (most defensively)
  • Fentrell Cypress-88 votes (second among defensive backs)

This list would be the presumed starters on offense, defense, and special teams. North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye got the nod at quarterback with 107 votes. He also was chosen for ACC Player of the Year with 88 votes.

FSU’s Jordan Travis came in second place with 66 votes. In case you missed it, I broke down why I would take Jordan Travis over Drake Maye as the best quarterback in the ACC a couple of weeks ago. I understand Drake Maye put up good numbers, but North Carolina didn’t exactly play the toughest schedule with three non-P5 schools and many of the weaker schools in the ACC Coastal.

Also, the better defenses seemed to hold him in check, whereas Jordan Travis played a tougher slate of defenses overall. I suppose it comes down to overall usage, as Drake Maye had to be on the field much more because North Carolina was in so many dog fights trying to win close games(including two of those non-P5 games).

I think FSU will put more of the load on Jordan Travis this season, so we should see better numbers. Plus, I think North Carolina’s 2023 schedule may be a little tougher than last year.

I can’t help but think all the schools on Tobacco Road want to put the shine on their local guy, knowing FSU is looking to get out of this awful conference.
