FSU baseball ends 10 game losing streak with win over Clemson
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (13-16, 4-9 ACC) defeated Clemson 5-1 Thursday night to end a 10-game losing streak. FSU fans have been asking what happened to the Noles after a strong start to the season, and it’s been quite simple.
They haven’t had great starting pitching during that stretch, and permeated over into other aspects like the offense. However, that wasn’t the case Thursday night.
Starting pitcher Jackson Baumeister was outstanding, setting career highs with seven innings pitched, 14 strikeouts, and only two walks.
Baumeister struck out the side in the top of the first inning and seemed to carry over to the offense, who scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and didn’t look back.
DAmez Ross singled to lead off the inning, and Jaime Ferrer crushed a two-run home run. James Tibbs crushed a solo home run late in the game, and Jordan Carrion had an RBI single in the fourth inning. Ferrer extended his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest for an FSU player in the last decade. He finished the game 2-4 with three RBI.
Carson Montgomery picked up the save with 1.2 innings pitched, two walks, and two strikeouts. The closer role could be where Montgomery will be for the rest of the season. I think it suits him better than as a starter or middle reliever.
FSU baseball finally put it all together, good starting pitching, its most proven players delivered, and they played clean on defense to get a much-needed win. If anyone was beginning to question Link Jarrett, please know he’s the least of the problems over the past month or so.
He hasn’t forgotten how to coach, but it’s mainly because they don’t have the pitching needed to compete at a high level, especially with Wyatt Crowell out.
Hopefully, the Noles can carry the momentum from Thursday night into the rest of the series. Friday’s game will begin at 4 p.m. and air on the ACCNX channel.
