FSU football: Sam McCall commits to Texas A&M for 2023 season
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football saw its 2022 top signee, Sam McCall, enter the transfer portal before the regular season ended a few weeks ago.
The Noles have had a handful of players to enter the portal, but McCall seemed to be the only one who left on negative terms. His frustration appeared in a video on his Instagram Live social media feed, venting about the coaching staff.
However, I pointed out at the time, the coaching staff has a track record of getting freshmen on the field when ready to contribute. In fact, the coaching staff had McCall on special teams early in the year at kick returner, even though he never looked natural at the position.
He eventually lost that job to Trey Benson and never cracked the two-deep in the secondary, a position with very little depth, which says a lot about where he was development wise.
Nevertheless, McCall announced he has found a new home at Texas A&M, ironically. A program that’s seen a max exodus of their top players to the transfer portal, and a program viewed upon with major cultural issues.
A program coached by the guy (Jimbo Fisher) that left FSU football in a mess that has taken years to dig out. I always thought McCall was a safety, and that’s what the coaches saw as well, but the rumor was he wanted to play cornerback.
Maybe he’ll get that shot at Texas A&M? I wish the young man well and hope he finds a spot to contribute while continuing to mature emotionally and as a player.
His behavior when he left the program wasn’t a good look, and there’s a reason there was no mention of him from Mike Norvell, unlike when other players like Amari Gainer and Keyshawn Helton entered the transfer portal.
Good luck to Sam McCall in College Station.
