FSU football coaches are hard at work deciphering who’ll be the best additions to the roster from the transfer portal and the high school ranks.

The coaches plan to be selective at some key positions, but the improvement along the offensive and defensive lines is a priority.

I mentioned the defensive tackle position as the No. 1 priority here, and there’s no coincidence the first addition from the transfer portal was at that position.

I also listed offensive tackle as a priority from the portal, and FSU identified a major target. Jeremiah Byers, a UTEP offensive tackle and All-Conference performer, has set-up an official visit with the Noles this weekend.

Byers announced the news via his Twitter account late Wednesday night.

Byers played right tackle for UTEP the last two seasons and has two years of eligibility left. He earned Conference-USA First Team accolades this year and was Honorable Mention Conference-USA last year as a redshirt freshman.

Byers earned Conference-USA All-Freshmen Team in 2020. He checks in at 6’4″ and 315 pounds. Byers announced he would enter the transfer portal on December 2nd, and FSU wasted no time offering on December 5th after doing their due diligence.

FSU usually moves quickly with players they have higher on their boards, so getting Byers in this weekend for an official visit is a good sign of how they feel about him.

Since entering the portal, Byers garnered interest from Penn State, Miami, Maryland, and Texas Tech.

Byers would likely come in and be a starter/major contributor right away and his addition would likely allow guys that have been playing out of position to move to their more natural position on the interior.

It would also provide more depth and experience on the offensive line, which will lose quite a bit with the departures of Dillan Gibbons and D’Mitri Emmanuel.

Hopefully, they’ll be able to close out this recruitment this weekend.
