I had FSU football in the top half of my preseason ACC Power Rankings, and there’s still some truth in that after losing to three of the better teams in the ACC by a combined 18 points.

The Noles had a bye-week and we got to see if Syracuse was a contender or pretender. It turns out they are closer to who I thought they were.

They had a +4 turnover margin and only managed 14 offensive points against Clemson, and now will face two good defenses in back-to-back weeks in Notre Dame and Pittsburgh.

Miami got blown out by Duke. I said on Twitter that I wouldn’t be shocked to see Duke defeat Miami even though Miami were ten point betting favorites. Louisville defeated Pittsburgh in a close game. Virginia got their first Power 5 win with a small upset win over Georgia Tech.

Wake Forest easily defeated Boston College

Here are my updated rankings after seven weeks by division and then overall as a conference:

ACC Atlantic

  • Clemson (8-0, 6-0 ACC)
  • Wake Forest (6-1, 2-1 ACC)
  • Syracuse (6-1, 3-1 ACC)
  • NC State (5-2, 1-2 ACC)
  • FSU (4-3, 2-3 ACC)
  • Louisville (4-3, 2-3 ACC)
  • Boston College (2-5, 1-4 ACC)

ACC Coastal

  • North Carolina (6-1, 3-0 ACC)
  • Duke (5-3, 2-2 ACC)
  • Pittsburgh (4-3, 1-2 ACC)
  • Georgia Tech (3-4, 2-2 ACC)
  • Miami (3-4, 1-2 ACC)
  • Virginia Tech (2-5, 1-3 ACC)
  • Virginia (3-4, 1-3 ACC)

Overall Power Rankings

  1. Clemson
  2. Wake Forest
  3. Syracuse
  4. NC State
  5. FSU
  6. North Carolina
  7. Louisville
  8. Duke
  9. Georgia Tech
  10. Pittsburgh
  11. Miami
  12. Virginia Tech
  13. Virginia
  14. Boston College

Parting Thoughts

There are no marquee games in week nine that will decide much in the ACC conference. Miami will see if they can get back on the winning side of things against a bad Virginia team.

If they lose that game, their chances to become bowl eligible become slim, with games against FSU, Clemson, and Pittsburgh remaining. Wake Forest is only a -4.5 betting favorite against Louisville on the road, which has my attention.

Syracuse will face a tough Notre Dame defense, so we’ll see if that offense continues to struggle and if they will let the Clemson loss turn into another loss. Pittsburgh will travel to North Carolina, and Virginia Tech will travel to NC State Thursday night.

FSU will look to get back on the right side as near three touchdown betting favorites host Georgia Tech at noon Saturday.
