FSU football coaches have been combing every nook and cranny to improve their roster, with a lot of emphasis on the secondary and in the trenches.

They’ve entertained a lot of defensive backs over the past couple of months, and the latest target was Oregon’s Daymon David, who entered the transfer portal in early May. David, who originally hails from Maryland was a former four-star safety in the 2021 recruiting cycle.

He was the No. 235 player and No. 15 safety, appearing in nine games last season. David officially visited the Noles on June 10th, and it seemed like it would come down to either David or another transfer target as FSU has limited scholarships remaining to complete its roster.

However, rumors of David contemplating returning to Oregon surfaced, and it became official Monday as he withdrew from the transfer portal to return. I think it came down to the same reason as all of the other defensive backs they have entertained.

Defensive backs enter the transfer portal hoping to find somewhere they can play/start immediately. However, FSU’s secondary has a lot of talent with the experience that makes that difficult to determine.

David had a lot of value because he had three years of eligibility left, but at the same time, there was no guarantee he’d make an impact in 2022. Oregon lost their All-American safety, and David dealt with a lot of injuries last season.

The allure of staying somewhere he’s familiar and finally getting healthy must have been enough to make him feel comfortable staying in Eugene.

It appears the Noles will not take another defensive back from the transfer portal and will likely finish completing their roster with another player to go in the trenches. The coaching staff has added 11 transfers, with enrolling this spring.
