FSU football finally got back on the board Saturday with two 2023 commitments. It was their first commitment for that recruiting cycle since April 1.

I wrote about the JUCO DL commitment here, but I want to focus on the other commitment in athlete Quindarrius Jones. The first thing FSU football fans notice is he has no stars, and FSU was the first school to offer him a scholarship.

Next follows the question of why did the coaches accept a player’s commitment with no stars and no other commitments. I get it, but I think this staff has more than proven themselves when evaluating talent.

How many kids have they been on earlier with no buzz, only to see that kid’s recruitment blow up later? Quite a few.

This kid is a player they invited to their Elite Camp earlier this month, so they had a chance to see him compete against other established recruits, and he did well. He lists as an athlete, but I think they like him at defensive back in a safety role.

Jones stands 6’2″ and 187 pounds with a verified 100-meter time of 11.27 and a 200-meter time of 22.25. For perspective, Ramsey’s best 200-meter time out of high school was 21.44, and Jones has an entire year to get stronger and faster before graduating. I point out the 200-meter time because that gives more context to his top-end speed to cover ground as a safety.

One reason this kid doesn’t have a ranking or any offers, is he just started playing football about a year ago and likely hasn’t been to many recruiting camps.

However, he’s the first defensive back taken in the 2023 recruiting cycle, so they must feel confident with their in-person evaluations. Now, I’ll be curious to see how his recruitment unfolds after bursting on scene. Will the Mississippi schools come running now?

For the star chasers, I’d bet he’ll be get a three-star rating soon, and we’ll see how high he climbs once he receives more offers or attends other camps and plays well. This commitment gives the Noles eight for the 2023 recruiting cycle.
