FSU football: Noles make top 8 for blue-chip Makari Vickers

FSU football recruiting seemed to have hit a lull as they go into the important summer months.

They’ll be hosting some major targets in the coming weeks, and one of those has been on campus multiple times already in blue-chip defensive back Makari Vickers.

The Tallahassee product is familiar with what the program and its coaches offer. It’s one reason the Noles made his top eight list released Saturday afternoon.

It’s interesting the Florida Gators offered Vickers about a week ago and didn’t make the cut.

Vickers ranks as the No. 78 player and No. 5 safety nationally, according to composite rankings.  He’s the No. 21 player in the state of Florida. He checks in at 6’1″ and 189 pounds and also runs track.

Vickers has been on the FSU football campus at least three times this spring as the coaching staff looks to make it a priority to keep the local talent home.

It’s something they’ve struggled with and it’ll be another fight against elite schools. Vickers has locked in official visits to Alabama, Oklahoma, and Texas in June. FSU will be fighting to get one of the two official visits remaining.

There are no crystal ball predictions for Vickers, and I don’t like to read too much into graphic edits, but Vickers on the wing of a plane doesn’t exactly scream he plans to stay local. Most people think Alabama is the team to beat. They signed another blue-chip safety from Vicker’s high school in the 2021 recruiting cycle in Terrion Arnold.

We’ll see if the Noles can get him on campus for an official visit between now and the Early Signing Period in December.  If that doesn’t happen, it’ll be another quality top 100 player they failed to keep home.
