FSU baseball (24-15, 11-10 ACC) blew a chance to win the Clemson series late Sunday afternoon.

The Noles took a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, only to see that lead evaporate into an 8-5 loss.

The Noles led every game in the series into the seventh inning and only salvaged a 4-3 victory on Saturday. Here are some of my key takeaways:

  • Parker Messick and Bryce Hubbart did their jobs as starters, but Carson Montgomery did FSU no favors with a one-inning outing. However, the bullpen did a great job of putting the Noles in positions to win late. FSU still has work to do on finding a day three starter.
  • The FSU defense was atrocious and one of the reasons they lost the series instead of sweeping Clemson.
  • Offensively, FSU did enough to win, but it wasn’t an impressive showing against a mediocre Clemson pitching staff.

FSU baseball is a team that’s too Jekyl and Hyde. If it were not for Jordan Carrion’s bat over the past 10 games, I’m not sure where this team would be. Logan Lacey and Alex Toral were non-existent at the plate in the series, and Logan Lacey didn’t have his best days fielding over the last few games.

FSU committed EIGHT errors in three games, with the offense scoring 13 runs. That’s not a lot of margin for error for the pitchers. The pitching staff only allowed one walk in the first two games, but walks killed them Sunday, as two of the four walks scored.

However, overall, they pitched well enough and kept a potent Clemson offense in check. Clemson is a decent team, but they depend heavily on the long ball. If you can keep them in the ballpark, they don’t have the pitching to hold up.

However, you can’t get potent offenses extra outs over and over. Mike Martin Jr. needs to do something with this lineup. Logan Lacey and Alex Toral likely need to sit for an entire game or two as neither offer anything right now.

I’m not sure what’s going on with Carson Montgomery, but that outing wasn’t what I was expecting from him. The Noles have all week to work on some things and flush this Sunday meltdown before welcoming TCU to town next weekend.
