FSU football: Staff laid groundwork for 2023 recruiting during COVID
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football began its spring practice Saturday, and the team looks the part physically, and the competition is the best it’s been in years.
The coaching staff is so confident in the direction of the program they invited the majority of the top recruiting targets to campus to see how they work and the vision for the program.
Not only that, they invited many former players to campus, which was a welcome sight to see. Let’s put it this way, neither the former players nor the recruits were disappointed with what they saw at practice.
FSU gained a commitment from a top 200 player in Keith Sampson at a position of need, and I wrote Monday how the Noles were trending for several other blue-chip recruits in the 2023 recruiting cycle and beyond.
How is that possible after a 5-7 season and the fourth consecutive losing season?
It’s all about relationships, and those relationships began getting built a long time ago. On August 5th, 2020, I wrote about it when I noticed how the staff was working during the COVID lockdown.
Of course, recruits couldn’t visit the campus, and the season was shorter, so the coaching staff took advantage of that time by looking into the future.
