FSU baseball saw their undefeated season come to an end Tuesday night in a 3-2 loss against the Jacksonville Dolphins. It’s the second time in two years the Noles have lost to them by one run.

The first two innings were foreshadowing of things to come as the Jacksonville pitcher struck out the first six batters and eight of the first nine.

The Noles got on the board first in the top of the third and tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning. Carson Montgomery was sharp early, getting through four innings with fewer than 50 pitches.

However, he hit the first batter in the bottom of the fifth, who later scored, and Jacksonville tacked on another run to tie the game 2-2. Jack Baumeister, who replaced Montgomery in the fifth, walked the first batter in the bottom of the sixth, and he eventually scored to give the Dolphins a 3-2 lead.

That was all they would need, as the FSU bats were cold as a polar bear’s toenails for the rest of the game. The Noles had a prime opportunity to tie the game in the top of the ninth. Isaiah Perry walked and stole second base, with Jordan Carrion reaching on an error.

The Noles had runners on 1st and 3rd with one out and couldn’t get the run across. FSU batters struck out 14 times against only two walks and six hits. Jaime Ferrer led the Noles, going 2-4 with a double.

FSU pitchers allowed six hits, striking out eight and walking two. The important thing to remember is both of those walks led off innings and eventually scored.

Final Thoughts

I thought Carson Montgomery showed some improvements over last year. The fifth inning was his nemesis, but he only threw around 50 pitches before coming out of the game. He fell behind several hitters 3-0 and 3-1 before getting them out, whereas he would have walked them last year.

He has to learn to pitch consistently ahead of the hitters, especially against better teams. FSU batters simply stunk it up Tuesday night. It was reminiscent of last year with all the strikeouts and poor at-bats. The umpire did seem to have an expanded zone at times, but there’s no excuse for it.

They’ll host Samford Friday at 6 p.m. ET.
