I wrote last year Jameis Winston deserved to be a starter in the NFL after leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Of course, the Buccaneers signed Tom Brady and gave him a lot of help Winston didn’t have en route to winning the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, Winston sat on the bench behind Saints legend Drew Brees and backup QB Taysom Hill.

Winston appeared in two games and thew only 11 passes in 2020, and it was Hill who played when Drew Brees suffered an injury.

However, it’s Hill that Winston sounded outplayed in the NFL preseason, and now it looks like Jameis Winston will be the starter for New Orleans in week one:

Thoughts

It looks like Jameis Winston couldn’t have landed in a better spot. New Orleans head coach Sean Payton is one of the best offensive minds in the game, and his offenses are routinely among the best in the NFL.

Winston is only 27 years old, and many folks were too quick to write off the former Heisman Trophy winner. It didn’t help his cause the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl last year after letting him go.

However, that organization didn’t do a lot to help his cause while he was there. Winston got eye surgery to correct his vision before the 2020 season and was sharp in the NFL preseason. He also lost a lot of bad weight and came into the 2021 season serious about winning the job in New Orleans.

He completed 16 of 22 passes for 219 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Turnovers have been his nemesis over his NFL career, but it looks as though he’s finally turned the corner with his decision-making and taking what defenses are giving him.

Congrats to Jameis Winston for earning another opportunity to be an NFL starting QB. They will take on the Green Bay Packers in the season opener on September 12.
