FSU football coaches are looking for pieces in the transfer portal to help the team become more competitive for the 2021 season.

The offensive line, defensive end, and wide receiver positions were areas I thought the coaches may turn to with the lone scholarship left that will count back to the 2021 recruiting cycle.

Reports broke last week the Noles were in talks with Oklahoma transfer offensive tackle Stacey Wilkins. They offered Alabama A&M Marcus Cushnie after a private workout, but that appeared to be as a preferred walk-on.

Cushnie committed to Purdue Monday night, and the Noles are no longer in the Wilkins sweepstakes. The last day for a player to put their name in the transfer portal is approaching, and a player that could help the Noles at wide receiver put his name in the portal Tuesday.

Former four-star WR Jake Smith:

As you can see, Smith is a former top 50 player nationally, originally from Scottsdale, Arizona. Jake Smith has been injured for part of his career after signing with Texas in 2019.

He missed all of the spring practice with a foot injury before getting clearance last month. However, it looks like Smith is exploring his options.

FSU football offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham is already following Smith on Twitter and has strong recruiting ties in Arizona. FSU wide receivers coach Ron Dugans is also following him on Twitter.

This recruitment could be important because of the delayed enrollment of 2021 signee Destyn Hill. It’s unclear when Hill will enroll, and if his enrollment is delayed until spring, Smith could provide experience and depth where Hill expected to be a contributor.

Jake Smith has solid production as a freshman, with 25 receptions for 274 yards and six touchdowns in 13 games. He appeared in seven games with 23 receptions for 294 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore.

Smith would have three years of eligibility remaining since the 2020 COVID season wouldn’t count. This one could be worth keeping an eye on.
